Balbirnie is a Georgian country house set in its own parkland at Markinch, and that shape changes the job in ways a town-centre hotel does not.

A country house spreads a day out

In a single-room venue the day comes to you. In a house like Balbirnie it does the opposite: getting ready happens somewhere quite separate from the ceremony, drinks spill out into the grounds if the weather is anywhere near kind, and dinner and dancing happen somewhere else again. Guests move, and so does the day.

That is lovely to film and it punishes a filmmaker who plants themselves in one room. It also means the walking time between spaces is real, and has to be planned for rather than discovered at 4pm with a drinks reception disappearing round a corner. Knowing the building is mostly about knowing how long it takes to get from one part of it to another without running.

The parkland is the other half of it. A house with grounds is one of the better subjects for a drone, and I fly a licenced Mavic 4 Pro. It stays weather-dependent and I will not promise an aerial shot in January that I cannot guarantee in August, but Balbirnie is the kind of setting that earns one when conditions allow.

Why one filmmaker suits it

A spread-out venue is where a crew looks most appealing on paper and least appealing in practice. Three people covering three spaces means three people who each saw a third of your day, and a film assembled from parts nobody experienced whole. I would rather move than split, and five cameras placed well cover a room without a second operator standing in it.

It also means what it always means here: the person you meet on a video call is the person in the house on the day, and the person editing it afterwards.

What it costs at Balbirnie

The same as everywhere. I do not price by venue. Twilight is £1,500 for the record of your day, Essentials is £2,500 and adds the cinematic film, and Signature is £3,000 with coverage through to 1am included rather than charged by the hour.

That last point is worth weighing at a venue like this, because a country house wedding tends to run long. Late coverage is billed hourly almost everywhere else, typically £100 to £500 on top. Markinch is about twenty minutes from home in Kirkcaldy, so there is no travel cost and no overnight either.
