Wedding Videographer at Pratis Barn

I filmed Adele and Steven's wedding at Pratis Barn, and I am booked back there in November 2026. So this is not a page about a venue I have read about. It is a page about a room I have worked in, and about why barns are the hardest buildings in Fife to film properly.

Almost none of the difficulty in a barn is about cameras, which is why barn weddings go wrong on film more often than hotel weddings do.

The problem with barns is sound

Everyone assumes the hard part is the light. It is not, it is the acoustics. A barn is a big hard box: stone or timber, a high roof, an uncarpeted floor and very little soft furnishing to absorb anything. Sound bounces. A camera microphone twenty feet from your celebrant picks up the room far more than the voice, and what you get back is your vows with a wash of reverb over them, competing with a hundred and twenty people breathing.

That is not fixable in the edit. You cannot un-echo a room afterwards. It has to be solved on the day, with microphones on the people speaking rather than on the cameras, and with a backup recording running because barns are exactly where a single radio channel decides to misbehave.

This is why I say audio mastering is a real part of those 35 editing hours rather than a line on a list. In a hotel function suite it is straightforward. In a barn it is the whole job.

Then it gets dark, and it gets dark fast

Barns tend to have wonderful daylight through big openings and then essentially nothing once the sun goes. There is rarely a proper lighting rig, and what there is tends to be festoon bulbs, which look beautiful to the eye and are a genuinely awkward light source: warm, low, uneven, and often the only thing in the room.

Cinema cameras handle this far better than the phone in your pocket, which is most of the argument for shooting on them. It still means the evening is a different technical proposition from the afternoon, and it means the person filming needs to have decided in advance how the dancefloor is going to be lit rather than discovering it at 9pm.

Practical things worth checking

• Power. Barns often have far fewer accessible sockets than a hotel. I run off batteries by default, so this is my problem rather than yours, but it is worth knowing your suppliers have asked.
• Temperature. A November barn wedding in Fife is cold, and cold drains batteries faster. Again, my problem, but it is the sort of thing that catches people out.
• Drone. Rural Fife is generally straightforward for a legal flight and a barn in open countryside is a good subject from the air. It stays weather-dependent and I will not promise it in advance.
• The walk between spaces. Barn venues usually spread across a yard, so guests move outdoors between ceremony, drinks and dinner. That is lovely, and it means a filmmaker who plants themselves in one room misses half the day.

Why one person suits a barn

Barns are open, and there is nowhere to hide. In a hotel a second or third shooter can tuck into a doorway. In a single open room with a high roof, a crew is simply visible, all day, in everyone's eyeline and in the photographs. One person with several small cameras already placed is far less intrusive, and intrusion is the thing couples actually notice on the day.

What it costs

The same as anywhere. Twilight £1,500, Essentials £2,500, Signature £3,000, with the 1am finish included on Signature rather than charged hourly. Barn weddings tend to run late, so that is worth comparing carefully against quotes that price the evening by the hour. Leven is a short drive from Kirkcaldy, so there is no travel cost.
