St Andrews weddings are travelled-to weddings

This is the thing that actually separates a St Andrews wedding from one down the road in Kirkcaldy, and it has nothing to do with the building. People come from a long way to get married here. It is a destination in a way that most of Fife is not, so the guest list tends to be scattered: university friends who met here and moved away, family flying in, people taking two days off and making a trip of it.

Which means two things for a film. The first is that the people who could not make it are a real group, not a footnote. Somebody's grandmother who could not travel, a friend who could not get the time off, and in a few cases people on the other side of the world. For them the film is not a memento, it is the only version of your day they will ever have. That is a different job from making something nice for a couple to re-watch.

The second is that a travelled-to wedding usually runs longer and looser. Guests are staying on site, nobody is driving home, and the evening goes where it goes. That is exactly why I would point most St Andrews couples at Signature, where coverage to 1am is included rather than billed by the hour, which is how nearly everyone else charges for it.

The gardens, and the weather being the weather

Rufflets is known for its grounds and they are genuinely worth using, which makes it a good venue for a drone. I fly a licenced Mavic 4 Pro. I will not promise you an aerial shot in advance, because the east coast does what it likes and a wedding is not reschedulable, but a garden venue on a decent day is the best case for one.

St Andrews weather also deserves saying out loud: it is coastal, it is exposed, and it can be doing something completely different from Kirkcaldy on the same afternoon. That is not a problem, it is just a reason not to build a plan that only works in sunshine. Some of the best footage I have shot has been in poor weather.

The same as anywhere. Twilight £1,500, Essentials £2,500, Signature £3,000. St Andrews is about forty-five minutes from home in Kirkcaldy, and it is still Fife, so there is no travel charge and no overnight.
